We found that the few failures with this class of outboards are due to fuel contamination or oil injection failure. As with all Mercury outboards we build we have removed the oil injection.

The "standard" ratio was 1.47 or 1.5 to 1, but there have always been optional choices to boat builders, or changed for high-altitude. For heavy boats, a 1.62 might have been installed to keep the prop pitch choices in the "sweet" spot. The gear ratio has been of interest to me lately because I have been researching motors and the etec and the Verado offer a 1.85. My take is it is all about torque and usable rpms. If you think about a high rpm Verado, you way not have tons of low rpm torque, but you have a lot of rpm to range.
